FASHION WEEK REDEFINED

(A WORK IN PROGRESS — 2020/2021)

Ever since preschool, I have been fascinated by the level of variation that can be achieved in fashion. After completing 500+ fashion illustration sketches from elementary through high school, I decided to do a 180 and refine my skills in graphic design and digital collage work. After a few years dabbling in other avenues of art, I decided to revisit my love of fashion illustration.

A few of the most influential designers I draw inspiration from include Raf Simons and Maison Margiela, both of whom I greatly respect. After observing various talented designers for years, I eventually found my own vision. My vision can be described by one description: refined power.

Too often in today’s world, people, especially women, are expected to dress a certain way and maintain a certain aesthetic. Our society lives in constant fear of what others think of their clothing. My designs are centered around women taking back the power of clothing and expression through fashion. I envision a world where women no longer worry about under or overdressing, and a world where there is no need to constantly send the infamous checking-what-others-are-wearing text: “Well, I don’t know what to wear, what are you wearing?”

What most people fail to realize is that they know exactly what they want to wear, but they need to check with society first to see if it is socially acceptable. My designs are meant to be bold, elegant, and modern. They are meant to turn heads. And most importantly, they are meant to look like they belong to a powerful woman who acts with purpose and poise.

First, I created a few illustrations (a work in progress — 10 total). The purpose of drawing illustrations is to create an idea of the overall vision. As I draw more illustrations in the series, I come up with a new idea that I had not previously thought about in the last design. Hence, why it is important for me to keep creating illustrations even if I feel as though I have expended my creativity.

To the left is a graphic design piece I created which features my favorite runway pieces from Alexander Wang Fall 2018/Fall 2019 collections. Seeking outside inspiration whether that be from magazines, photography, or other famous designers, has been very influential in developing everything I create. Whether it be a painting, collage, poster, or fashion illustration, finding inspiration through other creations is a huge step in every process.
